Mark,

Ok so I watched the set and I have a question about Collignon, the Belgium guy. I watch his snake/rollover shot and he is the only one I see that doesn't use his wrist to hold the handle. I've watched it over and over and in slow motion and can't see how the heck he is doing this. I noticed he is able to move the ball so well on the front toe with his hand still on the handle. I can't tell how he is brining the guy all the way around without using his wrist. Do you or any of the guys know how he does it? I think its crazy how he can do the snake shot and still handle that ball on front toe like that.

Another thing, kind of off subject, but what's up with these guys licking their fingers and streaking the table with it? I think its kind of gross since other players have to touch those handles. lol

In singles, I noticed on the serve the defender will hold the five bar with one hand and the goalie and two bar with one hand. I wonder why they do this because the guy serving never shoots from the five on the serve..they always pass the ball so it looks like its not that necessary to block like that I was thinking.

Lastly. They serve the ball through the hole. Do you have to do that at these big tournaments?

Hi John,

For Collignon's shot, he is actually not shooting a snake shot. He is shooting a "front-pin" shot (or sometimes called a "euro-pin" and probably a lot of other things too). It is a "palm roll" type of shot where he doesn't bring the player over the top of the rod -- instead of continuing to move the player up and over the rod on the takeoff as in the snake shot, after moving the ball laterally he moves the player back down and behind the ball and then hits the ball. It is a bit complicated to explain the details, but I can show you this in person on Saturday. This is a tough shot on a Tornado table and Collignon makes it look very easy.

In singles, they may do that for various reasons such as keeping missed passes from bouncing into the goal as well as lowering the likelyhood of them shooting a 5-rod shot as they are now back their to defend it. I think the main reason they don't shoot a lot of 5-rod shots is that a 5-rod pass to the 3-rod for a shot is a much higher percentage for scoring option than a 5-rod shot -- although mixing in a 5-rod shot every now and then when the time is right is not a bad idea =).

As for the serving hole serves, those videos were from last year before the rule changes were implemented. You will notice other rules differences such as when the ball goes off the table it goes to the person who served last to reserve to their 5-rod.

As for the licking, I'm not too sure of the reasons there -- maybe they are removing ball marks or marking timeouts on the table, but I don't think you need to actually lick your fingers to do that.

Hope this helps a little, but I can explain things better in person on Saturday. See you then.

One more thing, I don't recall if Tony Spredeman is on the video set I let you borrow, but if he is, be sure to take a look at his game. He does the snake shot by moving the ball around just like Collignon. The shots look very similar however one is a front-pin while the other is a snake shot.

Tony is on the dvd's. I definately noticed his game. Very quick on setting that ball up. I don't know about overall but in this tournament it seemed he was a little more effective on passing his ball from the 5 bar than collignon was. He played goalie only a few times with billy pappas on his team but when he did play it he seemed to score with ease from the back.
