I think foosball is going to get huge. From what I gather foosball was at the height of popularity in the late 70’s and early 80’s but then it kind of lost some popularity since then. I was a young lad at this time and I must admit that I would much rather pump a quarter into a video game than a foosball table. Today’s video games are even better than the ones I used to play when I was growing up so it would appear from this line of thinking that foosball will continue to decline in popularity. However, my thoughts on the matter bring me to a different conclusion.
Many of the people I meet while playing in local tournaments are very computer oriented in nature and often have careers working with computers for the majority of their day (i.e. programmers, webmasters, internet marketers, people running online businesses, etc.). When I tell a fellow foosballer that I work with computers they often joke around about how there are so many computer types playing the sport. The tone of the joke is almost as if it were a mark against computer types and foosballers. However, it is really a natural fit when you think about it. After clicking buttons on the keyboard and looking at the screen all day the last thing I want to do is bury myself in some computer game no matter how cool it may be. The thought of going to a local foosball tournament and playing a real live game and competing against real live people is very appealing after a day of computer related work. So what does this mean for the future of foosball?
Nobody can argue that computers will continue to play an even more dominant role in future of everybody’s lives. Our work days will be filled more and more with clicking on computer keys, looking at screens, and interacting with people in cyberspace. To unwind from this people will need something other that computer games or TV. People will need foosball
